Fragile X is the most common inherited cause of intellectual disabilities

It is also the most common known cause of autism

Unlike many other genetic diseases, it may not be immediately apparent if a person has Fragile X. Symptoms - learning problems, autism, anxiety, and some physical features - can be subtle or quite pronounced.

> What are the common symptoms?

Fragile X is caused by just one gene. This gene, FMR1, shuts down and fails to produce a vital protein. 1 in 4000 males and 1 in 6-8000 females worldwide have Fragile X.

Testing for Fragile X is done by a simple and reliable DNA blood test. This test is widely available, so talk with your doctor. There are many medications and therapies that can help people who have Fragile X, but no cure yet. FRAXA is working to change this.
