With a $50,000 grant from FRAXA Research Foundation from 2003-2004, Dr. Bassem Hassan and his team at Flanders University researched how Fragile X fruit flies can help further future studies for Fragile X treatment research.

Bassem Hassan, PhD, Team Leader of the Hassan Laboratory with the ICM (Brain & Spine Institute), is interested in the fundamental mechanisms of development and variation in the nervous system. He frequently uses the fruit fly model to explore these mechanisms, including a study in 2004 where he and his team demonstrated that dFMRP regulates the actin skeleton in fruit flies, signaling mechanisms for Fragile X in humans.
